Heat Wave Kicks Off Labor Day Weekend in San Diego

California braces for severe heatwave through Labor day

High temperatures in the desert included 116 degrees in Palm Springs, 114 degrees in Thermal and 113 degrees in Indio.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said an excessive heat warning remains in effect through 10 p.m. Saturday in cities like Escondido, El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, Poway and San Marcos, which will experience temperatures between 92 and 104 degrees.

Ice water stations were set up and dozens of people, many of them homeless, were taking shelter Friday. To put this in perspective, the average high on September 1 is 70 degrees.

"Expect another hot one today", the NWS said, adding the weather could cool off even more Thursday - but still remain very hot - before getting hotter again Friday and through the weekend.

Smoke from nearby wildfires will also linger to start the day but south winds may help to improve conditions later in the day.

I've seen numerous heroic acts, everything we've seen on the TV from the first responders to just neighbors helping neighbors. "The Jacksonville Jaguars will support whatever scheduling decision the National Football League makes", he said Wednesday.

Managers of California's power grid asked for voluntary electricity conservation. This break from the heat is courtesy of the remnants of Tropical Storm Lidia, which will bring an increase in moisture to the region.

About 500 firefighters battled the blaze and reduced the raging flames, but the freeway was expected to be shut down all night and mandatory evacuation orders were issued for residents in Burbank near the fire.

In addition, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has extended the current Air Quality Alert until further notice, meaning wildfire smoke will continue to pour into the southwest part of the state. Officials said Friday that one of the worst US wildfire seasons in terms of land burned is likely to keep scorching Western states and blanketing them with smoke until later this fall.

Officials said there is a high risk of heat-related illness especially for sensitive groups such as the elderly, children, sick people, along with pets and livestock.
