Jurgen Klopp has been chasing Keita all summer after identifying him as one of his prime targets but Liverpool found it hard to agree a fee with a stubborn Leipzig side.

Having failed to persuade RB Leipzig to sell 22-year-old midfielder Naby Keita, Liverpool have triggered his £48m release clause for next summer.

Now Liverpool have thrashed out an agreement that will see Keita move to Anfield in July 2018.

The deal will surpass the £35 million club record fee the Merseyside club paid Newcastle to sign Andy Carroll.

They will reportedly pay an undisclosed premium as well.

The midfielder is now undertaking a medical and an official announcement is expected soon.

RB Leipzig were last years Bundesliga runners up behind Bayern Munich, and like the reds are in the group stages of the Champions League.

Keita, along with Southampton's Virgil van Dijk, was a priority for Liverpool coming into the summer transfer window.

The Anfield club are also prepared to test Monaco's resolve to keep midfielder Thomas Lemar by offering to pay about £60 million before Thursday's transfer deadline.

However, it appears that Liverpool have been quick to strike now amid speculation from Catalan publication Mundo Deportivo that Barcelona had identified Keita as a potential late alternative to Philippe Coutinho.
