Apple focusing on self-driving technology, not building cars: report

Apple self driving car

Putting the "Apple Car" on hold, Apple plans to work with other carmakers to get the new self-driving tech into the new autonomous cars that will be in future garages and driveways of customers.

"Apple is just trying to play catch up", this person told Business Insider. Apple allegedly had plans to completely redesign the very idea of a vehicle, working on motorized doors and even the possibility of literally reinventing the wheel in a more spherical shape. With the upcoming release of the iPhone 8 Apple may be well on its well to a $1 trillion market cap that it could possibly reach at some point next year.

Apple at one time had plans to build a self-driving auto but then it abandoned the idea and started working on autonomous vehicle technology à la Uber and Waymo.

Executive Steve Zadesky was originally in charge of titan and he wanted to build a semi-autonomous vehicle similar to Tesla. However, the company ended up putting those ambitions aside and chose to focus on autonomous systems instead, with plans to test its campus shuttle, people familiar to the matter told the New York Times. The scale of the project led to internal problems and discussions of Apple not having a clear path for Titan. While the bus isn't yet running, it's hard to imagine Apple employees needing a lift and chirping, "Let's go hop in the PAIL!".

Venezuelan president calls on Russian Federation and Vatican to fend off United States threat
It also has signaled its intention to go after opponents it deems responsible for months of street protests against Maduro. Maduro's critics accuse him of clinging to power by hijacking state institutions amid shortages of food and medicine.

Foremost, the group of five said the project often lacked clarity and engineers attempted to pull Project Titan in many different directions.

In April, Apple was given permission to test self-driving technology in California, the state's Department of Motor Vehicles' website revealed.

Apple will use another company's vehicle to work on the PAIL shuttle. The company also looked into lidar, which is a light and ranging detection sensor currently being used on driverless cars that as of now requires a giant cone to stick out of the top of the vehicle.

The Times says that an upcoming example of that collaboration is an autonomous shuttle service that will ferry employees back and forth between the company's Silicon Valley offices in Palo Alto and Cupertino.
