Google may getting ready to launch smart headphones that offer direct access to Google Assistant
The mooted headphones stem from a mystery string of code discovered in a Google app teardown back in April that referred to the codename "Bisto". It looks like Google is taking the hint, and making a mini version of Google Home. As things stand right now, Google Lens support mostly comes down to simple text recognition functionalities.
Version 7.10 of the Google app contains references to something called "Bisto". Apart from giving commands through Google Assistant, the device will be able to hear incoming notifications and read them aloud. Now, that's exactly the kind of headphones Google is working on. This particular feature has yet to be distributed on a global level but will presumably become more widely available shortly, with its latest version already looking like a almost finished product.
It also appears that Google didn't include an always-on microphone with the product, which means that users won't be able to talk to the assistant with a wake phrase like "Okay Google". At that time, it was speculated as portable audio device. Additionally, there is a mention of a Google Assistant button on a left earcup, which suggests these the headphones are wireless over-ears and not earbuds. The undeclared button, located at the top, should be for power. Can't update headphones. Bisto firmware update New features and fixes are available.
It seems that the Google Assistant enabled Bisto may run on Android Wear. Last year, Google held a hardware event in October to officially unveil the Pixel phone as well as the Google Home and Google Wifi products. For starters, Google is home to one of the most well-funded research and development teams of the planet. It would be a logical step for the company to turn the heat on Apple, which has its highly anticipated iPhone 8 in the works, by launching these headphones alongside the Pixel 2, which is expected to give a tough competition to iPhone8.
Additional lines in the app provide some more information about the headphones.
