A New York City cop was shot by a gunman who later took his own life, police said Thursday. Two other shots hit his bulletproof vest.

Forewarning data is preparatory, police said officers trust they saw the man holding a tyke, potentially a newborn child, at a window of the building.

The officer was shot in the arm and was taken to Jamaica Hospital, according to reports.

After the shots were fired, the suspect then barricaded himself in the backyard of the home, armed with his gun.

They discovered the man dead from what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Police Commissioner James O'Neill said in a press conference Thursday night.

Mayor Bill de Blasio has been briefed on the shooting, according to a tweet from his office.

Investigators in Brooklyn say a woman had called police claiming her 29-year-old son was emotionally disturbed, but non-violent and unarmed.

"This vest definitely saved his life", O'Neill said.

Police say a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun were found at the suspect's side.

"What could have been just another day, just another call turned into something much worse", the mayor said.

The suspected shooter was holed up in the home for several hours as police converged on the area. "Our officer is going to come through it, he's a courageous young man, he's going to come through it".

De Blasio said the wounded cop had a "great attitude" as he lay in his hospital bed and even made light of his situation.
