FacebookWatch will begin beta testing in certain markets over the next few weeks, after which a full roll-out is expected later this year.
Founder Mark Zuckerberg hopes that videos produced through the FacebookWatch platform will eventually form communities around them. And it is taking the risk out of the content-creation endeavor for many publishers, either by paying to offset their production costs or offering to license or buy their content outright, people familiar with the arrangements say.
"Shows are made up of episodes -- live or recorded -- that follow a consistent theme or storyline".
Facebook users will be able to see through different sections what are the most talked about shows, what is making people use the "Haha" reaction emoji and what their friends are viewing. The two companies have been communicating with each other via Facebook Messenger and G-Chat. It admits that "we've also funded some shows" as examples. If you like any show, you can just follow the show, and latest episodes will then appear in your Watchlist.
YouTube has already vowed to take down any inappropriate content, and now wants to make its platform a safe space for creators to express themselves, and advertisers to promote their goods or services. If it can drive enough viewers to these shows thanks to its 2 billion total users, Facebook could offer significant revenue-share payouts, attracting better and better content creators.
"In general, the model here feels very YouTube-like, with a subscription model, though Facebook's apps for TV platforms in recent months have signaled the broad structure and interface, with a combination of videos recommended or liked by friends, things you've saved, things that are popular on the platform, and so on", said Jan Dawson of Jackdaw Research.
