Summary: In a fresh development in Tamil Nadu politics, AIADMK members of Jayalalthaa faction led by Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, on Thursday contended that the appointment of TTV Dhinakaran as deputy general secretary by Sasikala violated the party by-laws.

At a meeting of senior party leaders, a resolution to this effect was adopted. The merger talks were fast-tracked as Dinakaran tried to assert his position with a series of appointments. While its mission has already been accomplished in Bihar, things could soon get a push in Tamil Nadu where the virtually leaderless AIADMK (just opposite to the ego tussle of two heavyweight leaders in Bihar) has little option other than accepting Modi's supremacy to stay relevant.

The decision was taken ahead of Palanisamy's visit to New Delhi on Friday where he will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to sources, AIADMK leaders Palaniswai and OPS and likely to meet this week and finalise the merger plans. Though BJP has said it has nothing to do with AIADMK, sources said a senior Sangh ideologue and economist and a Union minister were looking at ways of ending the factional feud in the party.

Issuing a veiled threat, TTV noted that using the AIADMK letterhead to pass a resolution against him goes against the Election Commission directive. This is because he had been expelled from the party in 2011 by late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, and had thus not been a member of the party for five consecutive years, as mandated.

"The EPS camp has accepted that Sasikala was appointed as GS". "People who became Chief Minister, Ministers and office-bearers of the party because of the magnanimity of Sasikala are questioning her".

In February, Palaniswamy won a confidence vote in the Assembly with the support of 122 MLAs.

But Dinakaran who returned to Chenai after a pilgrimage to Thiruvannamalai later on Thursday said that no one except the general secretary has the power to question his appointment.

In the Dinakaran camp, the suspicion now is that the BJP has increased pressure on the two factions to merge quickly. Dinakaran was the party candidate in the bypoll necessitated by the death of Jayalalithaa. Almost 30 ministers and top party officials participated in the meeting and key members signed the resolution that ousted Dinakaran from the party post. Another significant aspect of the resolution signed by 27 office bearers, including Palaniswami, is that it did not use the honorific of "Chinamma" to refer Sasikala, as was the practice in the past.
