The surface laptop was one of the devices to lose their recommendation
The breakage rate for Microsoft Corp's Surface devices is significantly worse than for other manufacturers' laptops and tablets, Consumer Reportssaid, adding that it was removing its "recommended" designation for Surface products. The news is headlined by a two-year problem report rate of 25%, suggesting that a quarter of all Surface owners will experience problems with their devices by their second year of ownership.
The problems included laptops freezing at startup or shutting down unexpectedly, as well as issues with the touch screens becoming unresponsive, Consumer Reports said.
In a fairly short but to-the-point tweet on Thursday morning, Reuters revealed that Microsoft Surface devices have underwhelmed in Consumer Reports' reliability tests.
"Microsoft's real-world return and support rates for past models differ significantly from Consumer Reports' breakage predictability", Microsoft said. Regarding the recommendation, Microsoft does not agree with Consumer Reports, stating that consumers provided different and positive experiences after purchasing the product. CR told us they numbered "at least 300", but would not disclose the exact number.
Are you looking for a little more rugged edge to your shiny new Surface Laptop?
Microsoft's new Surface Laptop and Surface Pro may well prove to be reliable in the future, proving that Microsoft has solved its reliability issue as I believe they have.
While other brands also may have experienced reliability issues to some degree, the difference in how unreliable the Microsoft devices were was "statistically significant", the release said. Arguably it's a slippery slope, since more often than not a consumer will own voice themselves if they found a product to be faulty, defective or of poor quality. The power and form factor of Microsofts Surface line are almost unparalleled but if they can't consistently pump out devices that don't experience immediate defects past the normal wear and tear, I don't think their will be many people that remain loyal to the brand. There are millions of these folks, and many of them supply us with information on hundreds of thousands of individual products, including everything from pickup trucks to washing machines.
Consumer Reports recently conducted a survey of almost 91,000 people who bought new laptops and tablets between 2014 and the beginning of 2017.
Microsoft launched its first Surface tablet in 2012. Consumer Reports estimates that about 25-percent of these devices result in such, particularly the ones which have been used over two years.
