French soldiers 'deliberately' hit by BMW in Paris

Police hunting a driver who rammed his BMW into a group of French soldiers in western Paris, before speeding off, have arrested a suspect.

The Paris Police Authority announced Wednesday that police units have launched an operation in the area to find the vehicle that attacked the soldiers on route.

Earlier, six soldiers were wounded after a vehicle was driven at them near their base in Levallois-Perret.

France's police department said in a message on Twitter that a search for the vehicle was under way.

Levallois Mayor Patrick Balkany denounced on BFM what he called an "odious attack" and said it was "without a doubt deliberate".

They were part of the 7,000-strong anti-terrorism Sentinelle force set up in January 2015 which sees armed, uniformed soldiers patrol the streets and guard high-risk areas such as tourist sites and religious buildings.

The incident took place around 8 a.m. local time outside military barracks in the northwest of the city.

Three of the soldiers hit in the morning attack were slightly injured, while three were more seriously hurt, but their lives weren't in danger, according to the Defence Ministry.

A man believed to be the "chief suspect" in an attack on soldiers in Paris has been shot and arrested by police, French officials have announced. The counterterrorism department of the Paris Prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the attack on soldiers in a Paris suburb, the Agence France Presse news agency reported. The broadcaster reported that he was arrested between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais. He confirmed the vehicle had targeted to the soldiers but added the motive of the attack remained unclear.
