Former minister elected as new vice president of India

Eminent politician and former Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has been elected as the 13th Vice-President of India. Soon after his joining the party, he rose in ranks and became the General Secretary of the Party in Andhra Pradesh in 1985.

Nominated Rajya Sabha member and actress Rekha also voted.

We don't serve non-veg as we can manage only veg because of a paucity of funds. Raja also extended his good wishes to Venkaiah Naidu.

Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu entered the RSS by accident - his links began in childhood when he chanced upon a "shakha" while playing. In 1973-74, he was president of the Students Union of Andhra University Colleges.

Earlier, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and BJP President Amit Shah congratulated Naidu for his new post.

Others who didn't vote include Anu Agha and Naba Kumar Saraniya (both Independents), Abdul Wahab and PK Kunhallikutty from the IUML; Mausam Noor and Ranee Narah (both Congress) Udayan Raje Bhonsle from the NCP; Ambumani Ramadoss from the PMK didn't cast his vote.

Born in a farmer's family in Chavatapalem, Andra Pradesh in 1949, Naidu is a graduate in law.

Last month, Trump's eldest son insisted that his 2016 meeting with the pro-Kremlin lawyer was about adoption of Russian children. Mr Trump Jr later revealed he had agreed to meet her after being told he could receive damaging material on Hillary Clinton .

According to BJP officials, apart from the NDA's 81 Rajya Sabha members and 338 Lok Sabha members, members of both Houses of the AIADMK (50), YSR Congress (10) and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (14) will also vote in favour of Naidu.

Venkaiah had three continuous terms in the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka from 1998 to 2016, when he shifted to Rajasthan to get a fourth term. Naidu now holds the portfolios of Information and Broadcasting and Housing and Urban Affairs.

In a series of tweets, the Prime Minister recalled his memories of working with Naidu in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Centre, adding that he will cherish this aspect of their association.

He quit the post after the party's defeat in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. In 1974, Naidu joined the protest against the imposition of emergency and became the Andhra Pradesh convenor of Jayaprakash Narayan led Chhatra Sangarsh Samiti.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Naidu "for a fruitful & motivating tenure". He was the one who met congress chief Sonia Gandhi when there was a standoff between the government and the opposition in Parliament. Since the NDA has a majority in the Parliament, it was an easy win for Naidu.

"The House of Elders may be required to play an even more important role in the years ahead as we seek to build a new and modern India that confers additional rights on every citizen and confers dignity on those who had hitherto lacked the ability to take full advantage of citizenship".

Naidu was also steadfast in presenting issues in perspective with effective repartee whenever the need be. As Rural Development Minister, Naidu was instrumental in launching the hugely popular "Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana".
