US President Donald Trump dictated a misleading statement in which his son Donald Trump Jr said a meeting he had with a Russian lawyer in June 2016 was not related to his father's presidential campaign, the Washington Post has reported.

During a press briefing on Monday (local time), White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Mr Trump didn't mean it.

As he flew home from a summit of world leaders in Germany, Mr. Trump dictated a statement to be released by his son in response to a pending New York Times story about the meeting, according to the Post. Mr Trump Jr later revealed he had agreed to meet her after being told he could receive damaging material on Hillary Clinton.

Special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading an investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, has since asked the White House to preserve all documents relating to the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower.

However, something that will now create a problem for the President is his direct intervention in the matter, which might end up creating a legal wrangle for him.

The Washington Post cited unnamed sources from the White House in its damning article, and since there already seems to be at least some truth to the allegations, people are starting to wonder whether the fatherly suggestions are a smokescreen like the one Trump Jr used.

"I believe he was making a joke at the time", she said.

Markets Right Now: Cable companies and banks boost stocks
Both Discovery and Scripps reported quarterly earnings on Monday that reflected the challenges facing US media companies. The company reported $0.68 EPS for the quarter, missing the Zacks' consensus estimate of $0.72 by $0.04.

Last month, Trump's eldest son insisted that his 2016 meeting with the pro-Kremlin lawyer was about adoption of Russian children.

That Trump, according to the Post, was the author of the original statement raises lots - and lots - of questions.

"I am pleased to inform you that I have just named General/Secretary John F Kelly as White House Chief of Staff". Critics responded swiftly to the latest evidence that Trump sought to hide information about his team's contacts with Russian Federation during the campaign.

One of Trump's attorneys, Jay Sekulow, said in response to the report: "Apart from being of no outcome, the characterizations are misinformed, inaccurate and not pertinent". Does he feel he was misled by his son and by Jared Kushner if, indeed, they didn't tell him about these emails that they both received? The president personally dictated a message meant to deceive the public, directly participating in a cover-up.

Trump has already come under criticism for steps he has taken to challenge and undercut the Russian Federation probe. The statement additionally noted that the subject of the meeting was "not a campaign issue at the time".

Local law enforcement leaders agree the statement puts officers in a bad light and say roughing up suspects can't and won't be tolerated.

The president also strongly criticized Sessions for not firing FBI interim chief, Andrew McCabe, who has replaced James Comey in the investigation into Russian Federation.
