Pentagon Detects North Korean Submarine Activity, Ejection Tests

A Republican senator said US President Donald Trump has told him he would go to war to destroy North Korea rather than allow it to develop a long-range nuclear-armed missile

The Pentagon discovered "unprecedented" levels of North Korean submarine activity along with evidence of an ejection test that was carried out at the country's Sinpo Naval Shipyard, CNN reported on Monday, citing a United States defense official.

An ejection test examines a missile's "cold-launch system", which uses high pressure steam to propel a missile out of the launch canister into the air before its engines ignite.

The US official said the test coincides with unprecedented submarine activity and reports the rogue nation now has the capability to launch an intercontinental missile at the US.

A medium-range ballistic missile was intercepted over the Pacific Ocean early Sunday during a test of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, the Missile Defense Agency said.

South Korea and the United States have been installing a THAAD battery comprised of six launchers in a former golf course in Seongju, some 300 kilometers southeast of Seoul, since they announced the plan in July a year ago to better defend against the North's missile threats.

But the current USA assessment is that the North's SLBM program remains in the very early stages, it said. "We handle everything", US President Donald Trump told reporters during a Cabinet meeting.

Donald Trump announces new immigration policy favouring financially stable English speakers
Trump, Perdue and Cotton argued on Tuesday that low-skilled and unskilled immigration into the United States has depressed wages. No longer offer green card preference to the extended family or adult children of immigrants already living legally in the U.S.

However, he didn't stipulate how the U.S. plans to deal with Pyongyang and Kim Jong-un's regime.

CNN said that land-based and submarine-based missiles are considered two-thirds of what is known as the "Strategic Triad", a theory that a state must have land, air and sea-based nuclear attack capabilities to successfully deter an enemy from trying to attack it.

That activity caused US and South Korean forces to slightly raise their alert level, according to one official.

Citing Korean Central News Agency, the Associated Press reported North Korea leader Kim Jong Un supervised the latest test and expressed "great satisfaction" as a result of the successful launch.

Late Friday night, the North test-fired what it later claimed to be a second and improved intercontinental ballistic missile, drawing strong condemnation for violating multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions.
