But Congressman Peter King, who accompanied Trump aboard the Air Force One to NY and back, told reporters that he saw no indication of Priebus' exit during the flight.
Priebus, the former Republican National Committee head, had been a frequent target of rumors about his job security amid infighting and confusion within the White House and a long whisper campaign by Trump allies.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said she did not think Priebus' exit would affect the White House's relationship with the Republican Party.
But recently, it appeared the tide was moving against the establishment Republican.
The supporters also said that Preibus had been given "an impossible job of managing a president who chafed at attempts to control his more rash impulses".
Trump's announcement that he had replaced Priebus with Kelly came just moments after news broke that Scaramucci's wife, Deidre, has filed for divorce, allegedly due to his "naked political ambition", according to the New York Post. The former chief of staff reportedly opposed Scaramucci's appointment, as did Sean Spicer, who resigned as press secretary as a result of Scaramucci taking over as communications chief.
In a statement, Priebus said it had been one of the great honors of his life to serve Trump and the country.
Newt Gingrich also took to Twitter to praise both Priebus and Kelly.
A Marine, Kelly served in the military for almost five decades and served in positions including chief of Southern Command, senior assistant to the secretary of defense and legislative liaison to Congress, and he served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The recent revelation that Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with a Russian government lawyer has magnified those questions and fueled Trump's frustration over leaks to the media. "I support him in that", he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room".
The former chief of staff declined to speak with reporters traveling with the president after returning.
Kelly admits that he did not get off on the best foot with Congress.
"The selection of Secretary Kelly as the new Chief of Staff will bring unparalleled leadership skills to the job".
Meanwhile, Trump continues to publicly decry his own attorney general, Jeff Sessions, tweeting this week that Sessions is "beleaguered".
Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC, a frequent Trump critic, welcomed Kelly as "one of the strongest and most natural leaders I've ever known".
Three chiefs of staff did indeed serve in the role in three years while Obama was president.
LaVar Ball tells another woman to 'stay in her lane'
When play restarted, the female referee had been replaced, according to ESPN . "She's got a vendetta", Ball said after the game. And now, apparently women shouldn't be challenging him when they're officiating his teenage son's AAU basketball game.
Curtis Granderson doesn't want Lucas Duda to leave
Tampa entered Thursday's games a half-game behind the Royals, and 1 1/2 games behind the Yankees for the two wild-card spots. Top prospect Amed Rosario is slated to arrive first, shortly after the trade deadline. "They're in the hunt", Duda said.
Trump names new Chief of Staff to replace Reince Priebus
Trump had lost confidence in Priebus, privately questioning his competence after major legislative items failed to pass the U.S. Priebus ally Sean Spicer left his post as White House press secretary on the same day Scaramucci's appointment was announced.
