Mercury Prize judge Ella Eyre defends Ed Sheeran inclusion on shortlist

Stormzy, J Hus, The Big Moon and more announced for Mercury shortlist

Ed Sheeran's ÷ enjoyed incredible commercial success in 2017 but the Mercury Prize is famous for ignoring such achievements.

Lesser know artists whose albums were nominated include Sampha، J Hus، Loyle Carner، Dinosaur and The Big Moon.

Critics were split over his latest album "Divide" but it sold more than two million copies, ruled the charts and broke streaming records.

But the flame-haired hunk will have to beat off stiff competition from other musicians as he will go up against grime artist Stormzy for his debut LP "Gang Signs & Prayer", songwriter Sampha - whose full name is Sampha Sisay - for his debut album "Process" and The XX's "I See You".

That's when Green asked people around him who Edmondson was, "like I wasn't even worthy of talking to him", Edmondson said. That's when two men with Green allegedly pushed Edmondson against a wall and choked him, according to Bloom.

The 26-year-old star will be up against indie rock and alt-pop bands such as The xx, Alt-J, Blossoms, Animal House and The Big Moon. Jamie Callum, Ella Eyre, Lianne La Havas and Marcus Mumford are just four of the 12 judges who created the shortlist. 2017 marks the 25th year the prize has been given out.

Despite having won several Grammys and Brit awards since he burst onto the scene with his debut album "+" in 2011، Sheeran has never won the Mercury Prize.

"What these artists have in common is an infectious pleasure in music making and an arresting sense of urgency about the music they make".

The albums nominated for this year's prestigious Mercury Prize were announced on Thursday morning with grime superstar Stormzy the early frontrunner with the bookies.
