Each year the MTV VMAs encapsulates this spirit, bringing together music's greatest pioneers on one stage. The category awards videos that "inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice", according to the press release.
Like many awards shows and in the entertainment industry at large, diversity is not always celebrated and recognized as it should be to reflect the real world. Now, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards is bracing for impact with the first promo spot and will be part of a larger multi-platform campaign.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar leads the way in the 2017 Video Music Awards with an overall tally of eight nominations, including the artist category as well as video of the year for HUMBLE. Nominees for the socially voted Best Song of Summer category will be announced in the coming weeks.
R&B chart topper John Legend's video for "Surefire" is a visual ballad about a young Muslim woman and her Latino boyfriend struggling to preserve their relationship despite cultural barriers.

Taboo - who is of Mexican and Native American ancestry - honors American Indian communities and Standing Rock activists in his video for "Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL".
Also nominated in the category is The Weeknd'sReminder, Bruno Mars'24K Magic, Alessia Cara'sScars To Your Beautiful and DJ Khaled'sWild Thoughts featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.
