Each year the MTV VMAs encapsulates this spirit, bringing together music's greatest pioneers on one stage. The category awards videos that "inspire viewers to stand up and fight injustice", according to the press release.

Like many awards shows and in the entertainment industry at large, diversity is not always celebrated and recognized as it should be to reflect the real world. Now, the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards is bracing for impact with the first promo spot and will be part of a larger multi-platform campaign.

Instead of having two separate Best Male Artist and Best Female Artist categories, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Kendrick Lamar, Lorde and The Weeknd will now all compete against each other.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar leads the way in the 2017 Video Music Awards with an overall tally of eight nominations, including the artist category as well as video of the year for HUMBLE. Nominees for the socially voted Best Song of Summer category will be announced in the coming weeks.

R&B chart topper John Legend's video for "Surefire" is a visual ballad about a young Muslim woman and her Latino boyfriend struggling to preserve their relationship despite cultural barriers.

Jordan Spieth rebounds with insane star-making eagle putt at British Open
On the long 15th he drained a huge eagle putt across the green to recapture the lead, and another birdie on 16 took him two clear. Speaking after being presented with the Claret Jug on the 18th green, Spieth said: "This is absolutely a dream come true for me".

However, after this year's nominations were announced on Tuesday (25 July) night, both of these had been ditched, and replaced by Artist Of The Year. Damian Lemar Hudson's "Black SpiderMan" and Taboo ft.

Taboo - who is of Mexican and Native American ancestry - honors American Indian communities and Standing Rock activists in his video for "Stand Up / Stand N Rock #NoDAPL".

Also nominated in the category is The Weeknd's Reminder, Bruno Mars' 24K Magic, Alessia Cara's Scars To Your Beautiful and DJ Khaled's Wild Thoughts featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.

MTV revealed their list of nominees for the newly revamped awards show.
