Prime Minister Narendra Modi surveyed the devastation across Gujarat from the skies Tuesday, urging people across his home state to remain resilient. The prime minister also said that an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh will be given from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund to the families of those killed in the deluge and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured.

Three Army columns, 18 National Disaster Response Force teams and 11 of SDRF, along with local administration and fire brigade, had rescued 1,930 persons since Jul 21. "We have rescued over 7,000 people in the past two days", said State Relief Commissioner A J Shah.

Though the entire state is facing a continuous rain onslaught, the situations has turned alarmingly serious with the North Gujarat districts of Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Patan being inundated by heavy and continuous rains over the last 48 hours.

The relief and rescue works operations are being carried on in the flood affected areas of the state. "There has been an unprecedented inflow of water due to heavy rains in Rel, Sipu and Banas rivers of North Gujarat..."

The state, meanwhile, continued to see relatively milder amount of rains on Wednesday, with an average rain of seasonal rains reaching 555.2 mm or 68.52%. Flood waters have also forced closure of 832 roads, which includes five national highways, and 27 state highways.

"More than 650 people were rescued by agencies on Wednesday, including 272 through Air Force choppers", Principal Secretary (Revenue) Pankaj Kumar said.

Four MI-17V5 helicopters were conducting sorties from IAF bases in Jamnagar, Jodhpur and Phalodi, but air operations in Rajasthan were hampered by inclement weather.

The air force also airdropped 300 kg of food packets for the benefit of the flood marooned.

While the state government claims adequate relief was provided to all flood affected, there are accusations of laxity in rescue and relief efforts.

The relocation occurred as upstream along the Sabarmati River water was being released from the Dharoi dam about 60-70 km from Ahmedabad.

Banaskantha, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, Morbi, Gandhinagar, Kutch, Mehsana and Valsad were among the districts hit by the large-scale flooding.
