How to Create Alternative Art Space: Squat

Close to 200 Hamburg artists - including Gerhard Richter - occupied vacant historic buildings in a part of that city this past weekend and demanded that the city turn the old spaces into galleries and workspaces for artists. “They wanted to bring attention to the shortage of space for artists, as well as save the historic buildings from deterioration and demolition,” Art Forum quotes from a report in Süddeutsche Zeitung. Okay, those mourning the city’s cuts in arts funding, the loss of the Office of Cultural Affairs, and the lack of alternative art spacesunite and take over.
