Searching For Breakfast

More often than not, we find ourselves with an out-of-town visitor from some less breakfast challenged locale (like Austin or San Francisco) racking our brains for someplace other than the handful of trusty standbys to grab a couple of breakfast tacos or a stack of pancakes and coming up empty.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that we don’t have much of a breakfast culture in Dallas. Now feel free to prove me wrong. In fact I’d love it if you did, as I long for nothing more than a hefty list of breakfast spots to choose from on any given Saturday morning. I love going out to breakfast.

I’ll concede there are a few bright spots; the amazing beer biscuits at Barbec’s and the formidable brunch at Breadwinners, for example. But more often than not, we find ourselves with an out-of-town visitor from some less breakfast challenged locale (like Austin or San Francisco) racking our brains for someplace other than the handful of trusty standbys to grab a couple of breakfast tacos or a stack of pancakes and coming up empty.

So I’m happy to report that after consulting with the genius Eat Well Guide for local/organic restaurants in Dallas, up popped The Kozy, which based on their online menu, appeared to be a potential contender in my quest to round out our breakfast options.

Last Saturday, we packed up the family and made our way over for brunch to see if it fit the bill . We were instantly smitten with The Kozy’s laid back, unselfconscious, kid-friendly vibe. The space is pretty much just a small, low-frills room with a large handful of tables and booths facing a chalkboard displaying the day’s available fresh, local veggies and a bustling bar where the servers stay busy making excellent French press coffee and carafes of mimosas. The wait staff was unfailingly polite, sweet to our little ones, and not at all annoyed (or at least they hid it well) with my 20 questions about the food. (While not 100% local or organic, The Kozy sources as much as possible from local farms and serves only naturally-fed beef and bison, wild seafood and as much organic produce as possible.)

Since it was almost noon (and I have an almost unexplainable weakness for any menu item touting goat cheese), I skipped the amazing looking breakfast options (think challah French toast, organic omelets and ginger pancakes) and instead opted for the grass-fed buffalo burger topped with a giant mound of chevre, arugula and sliced tomato atop an excellent fresh bun. It was served with a nice pile of sautéed veggies, and the whole meal was, well…pretty much perfection. My girlies split a burger but subbed a nice heap of mashed potatoes for the veggies, and they completely cleaned their plates – which is a rarity with those two.

My hubby kindly tried out breakfast, since after all, that was our main objective, ordering the breakfast tacos. Now, let me pause here to say that my husband is a bit of a breakfast taco aficionado. Having lived in Austin for many years, where you can throw a rock in any direction and hit a taco joint, he honed his discerning palate on the wealth of offerings available there. . And in his exact words, “those were some really good breakfast tacos.”

Suffice to say, we’ll be back. In fact, as much as it pains me to write this, we’re planning to replace our weekly Chuy’s pilgrimage with a Saturday morning jaunt to The Kozy as part of our “eating local” initiative.

Next time, I’m getting those ginger pancakes – and maybe a burger on the side.

  1. Joslyn,
Your topic happens to be about my favorite meal of the day and I can assure there are PLENTY of fantastic breakfast spots.

To start, if your looking for breakfast tacos, migas, and the like, try:

The Taco Joint (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - Started by ex-Austinites)
All-Good Cafe (excellent Huevos Rancheros and pancakes)
Barcadia (not exactly family friendly but excellent Huevos Rancheros nevertheless)
Vickery Park - GREAT Migas, outstanding specials
Buzzbrews - the Hare Krishna is amazing
Garden Cafe - not stellar, but great for its patio/garden

My new kick is the diner…Dallas whoops Austin in the old school diner department. Try these timeless gems:

    The Mecca
    Metro Diner
    John’s Cafe
    Original Market Diner

Dallas is an incredibly rich food city if you know where to look. This is my bible:

  2. Hey Joslyn,

Thanks so much for mentioning the Eat Well Guide! I intern for the Eat Well Guide, and it’s definitely an excellent resource for not only finding sustainable and local food in your area, but across the U.S. and Canada as well. I am glad you are taking advantage of it! I would also suggest checking out our blog, the Green Fork http://www.blog.eatwellguide.org for additional information on the local food movement.
